3 words never to say in an interview

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

You are on a radio or TV show being interviewed about your new book. Congratulations! Your publisher tells you “PUSH THE BOOK- PUSH THE BOOK- YOU ARE THERE TO SELL-” Well - Yes and No. Often authors are trying to sell their book so hard that they turn off the host and the audience. There is a quid pro quo here. The host will introduce you as the author of your book in the beginning. Then maybe in the middle of the interview- and hopefully once at the end. That is great!. You want him to promote your book - not you.

But if you keep talking about it- you will come off as a pushy- pain in the butt author- and we don’t want that. Your job is to teach the audience- make them fall in love with you. Not to just sell your book. So what are the 3 words that you NEVER say in an interview ‘IN MY BOOK”. You can refer to it by using the title… IE: When I was researching Where’s Your Wow- I interviewed 100 CEOs and they taught me that….

Fill in the blank Pitch Formula

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

————————————————————
As I promised in my last tip, here’s another great
fill-in-the-blank formula you can use to create a show pitch
that is guaranteed to grab a producer’s attention virtually every
time …

* Pitch Formula:  “____ things you need to know/must do before
you _______”

And here’s a couple of examples of how you might apply it:

Show Pitch:  “7 things you need to know before you create your
will”

Show Pitch:  “5 things you must do before you move”

This formula is virtually limitless in terms of application. Just
fill in the blank with anything that people do … plant your
spring garden, take your kids trick-or-treating, quit your job,
try an online dating service … and then once you’re on the show
you’ll be telling them what they need to know or do before they
start.

Another fill in the blank pitch formula

Monday, September 14th, 2009

As I promised in my last tip, here’s another great
fill-in-the-blank formula you can use to create a show pitch
that is guaranteed to grab a producer’s attention virtually every
time …

* Pitch Formula:  “How the new _______ impact/s your _________
… and ___ things you need to do about it now.”

And here’s a couple of examples of how you might apply it:

Show Pitch:  “How the new wireless cell phone headsets impact
your brain … and 5 things you need to do about it now.”

Show Pitch:  “How the new tax code regulations impact your
retirement plan … and 3 things you need to do about it now.”

A simple formula to use anytime a new development or technology
has an impact on people’s lives in some way. In terms of this
formula, the impact is more effective if it is negative … but
it could be a positive thing too.
