E Mail Blasts

*** E MAIL BLASTS***

To promote Networking Magic, Jill Lublin amd I ran a promotion known as an e-mail blast, which catapulted the book to number one on the Barnes & Noble.com best-seller list. Their blast was so successful that Networking Magic held the top position for the better part of a week and stayed in the top twenty-five for several weeks. Two years earlier, Jill, and Jay Conrad Levinson and I employed the same technique to lift their book Guerrilla Publicity to number eight on Amazon.com.

What Is a Blast?

Essentially, a blast is a coordinated effort in which authors or their publicists enlist partners to make a book a bestseller with one of the big online booksellers.

Randy Gilbert (Dr. Proactive), a leading authority on e-mail blasts and the author of the best-selling book Success Bound: Breaking Free of Mediocrity , defines the blast as, “A powerful direct marketing approach that uses endorsements.

Basically, it’s a technique that brings direct marketing online and uses endorsements to get people to open e-mail promotions. E-mails are opened because they are sent only to opt-ins who want to receive e-mail from the sender.”

E-mail blasts are known by a host of other names, including Internet blasts and Amazon blasts. Briefly, here’s how it works:

1. The author or his or her publicist makes strategic alliances with partners who have lists of e-mail addresses. They also use names from their own lists and their publisher’s and network partners’ lists, and they can buy addresses from list brokers. The object is to accumulate a huge number of names and e-mail addresses. Partners agree to give authors access to the names on their lists and contribute incentives that will sweeten recipients’ interest in buying the book during the blast period.

2. The author or publicist composes a sales letter that will be e-mailed by the author and the author’s strategic partners to individuals on all of the lists.

3. The sales letter offers recipients free incentives to purchase the book provided that they buy it (a) from a particular online bookseller and (b) on a certain date or time.

4. The sales letters contain links to the bookseller’s website, at which recipients can purchase the book.

5. After the book has been purchased, buyers are e-mailed instructions on how they can get their bonus gifts.

E-mail blasts are effective because every hour the big online booksellers calculate the sales rankings for their top 10,000 best-selling books. So, if you generate a flurry of sales within a certain window of time, it can propel a book onto an online bookseller’s best-seller list. Once the book makes the list, even if it’s just for an hour, the book can legitimately be promoted as a national bestseller.

My colleague Robyn Freedman Spizman says– When your book is a national bestseller, it dramatically increases your promotion quotient. It invariably generates more interest in your book and boosts its sales. And once a book is a national bestseller, it can always use that designation. In addition, the author, even if he or she never writes another word, can always be called a bestselling author or the author of a national bestselling book.

When your book makes it to the bestseller list, influential members of the book world take notice. The media notices, as do industry insiders such as literary agents, book editors, and foreign rights buyers. “Instead of me having to hound the media to get coverage, the tables turned and they began calling me to be on their shows,” Gilbert reports. “The credential of being a bestselling author holds a huge amount of weight. The media loves to use that credential; it gets attached to your name–’bestselling author Randy Gilbert.’”

On the basis of the success of a blast that Gilbert ran for Jenna Glatzer’s book Outwitting Writer’s Block, she was able to command a substantially higher advance for her next book. The publisher upped the ante because it knew that Glatzer had a mechanism to sell lots of books right away.

Interestingly, blasts have produced an unexpected secondary benefit–brick-and-mortar sales can increase during blast periods. In addition, hundreds of thousands of people hear about the book through blasts, which helps it gain name recognition and can prove helpful down the line

THERE IS GOLD IN THE HILLS…. AT 6:00 AM

Lets talk TV. The best place is News shows at 6:00 and also at noon. But 6:00 am right before the Today Show and GMA have slots for you to get on. They are short- but they are golden. They want you to go on and talk about what is in the news today.  A great 3 to 5 minute segment that you can put on your site. And here is the good news—often there are 3 or 4 you can get on in every market. NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX,and don’t forget cable.
Call the producer when he/she gets off the air- lets say around 7:15 am and do your “pitch”. Send him your press kit, show the producer that you can react to what is in the news- and VIOLA!  YOU ARE ON.

I recently taught at the Communications Dept at Ithaca College ( as an Adjunct Professor)

First time I was back at IC in 32 Years. Here is a story they ran about publishing.

http://www.ithaca.edu/icview/4319/

Let me know what you think.

Rick Frishman ’76 tells writers “How to Get Published in America.”  by Karin Fleming ‘09

After two years in the theater department at Ithaca College, aspiring actor Rick Frishman ’76 was told by one of his professors a couple of things that might have sent a lesser man running off to join the circus: one, that his short stature would never land him a leading role, and two, that he just wasn’t good enough in general.

Or at least that’s how Frishman remembers it. Not one to give up on his theatrical dreams, the young man walked down the Dillingham Hall stairs to the television-radio department and started his own radio show. The show was all about theater, and he called it The Best of Broadway. For the next two years, he played different musicals on air, discussed their plots, producers, and stars, and hosted a trivia game. This entrepreneurial spirit helped him continue his career in radio after his graduation from IC (where he finished his B.F.A. in theater and earned a B.S. in communications).

Today, Frishman is a publisher of nonfiction books with the New York–based Morgan James Publishing and the founder of the public relations firm Planned Television Arts. He has amassed a wealth of knowledge during his career, and in April he came back to campus to share some of his tips on how to publish a book successfully. Avoiding standing behind the podium — because “then you wouldn’t be able to see me,” he joked — the experienced public speaker regaled the audience with stories about some of the best-selling authors he has worked with, including Stephen King, John Grisham, and Caroline Kennedy, and gave tips to the aspiring authors in the audience.

“I realized I wanted to be an author,” Frishman told the audience, “but I had one problem: I am the crappiest writer on earth.” Despite his self-deprecating humor, Frishman has actually cowritten nine successful books, including Author 101, a four-book instructional series for writers on how to get one’s work published. “I know how to get books published,” Frishman said, and then couldn’t resist adding, “and I have excellent ghostwriters.”

In addition to Frishman’s 30 years inside the publishing industry, he is a traveling lecturer and cohosts a weekly radio show out of WCWP in Brookville, New York, called Taking Care of Business.

Frishman was happy to share his expertise with the Ithaca audience on such topics as how to find a literary agent and how to promote your book for free. He also stressed the importance of the Internet and advised writers to purchase the URLs of their yet-to-be-published (or, for that matter, yet-to-be-written) book titles.

For Ithaca resident and aspiring author Jemma Macera, Frishman’s advice was just what she was looking for to help her market her book on her experience with Alzheimer’s. “I’m totally computer illiterate,” she says (and it wasn’t just modesty; during Frishman’s talk, Macera raised her hand and asked what a URL is*). “I need help. I’m so delighted I’m here because Rick is giving the help I need, or he can point me in the right direction.”

Pitch formula that can help you

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Here’s another great fill-in-the-blank formula you can use to create a show pitch
that is guaranteed to grab a producer’s attention virtually every
time …

* Pitch Formula:  “How to find _________ without _____________”

And here’s a couple of examples of how you might apply it:

> Show Pitch:  “How to find out how much money someone makes
without them knowing out about it”

> Show Pitch:  “How to find that long lost high school sweetheart
without spending a fortune on a private investigator”

Or how about “How to find out how your spouse really feels about
you … without asking them a single question.” Any time you can
offer people the chance to get something they want, without having
to “jump through the hoops” or “pay the price” that they would
normally expect to, you will have their undivided attention.

* Pitch Formula:  “What kind of ____________ are you? Take this quiz.”

And here’s a couple of examples of how you might apply it:

> Show Pitch:  “What kind of parent are you? Take this quiz.”

> Show Pitch:  “What kind of lover are you? Take this quiz.”

People are fascinated by finding out what kind of _____ they are.
Any time you can create quiz that divides people up into categories and tells them something about themselves, and more importantly, how they compare to others … they’ll be all over it.

Ask for Testimonials

ASK FOR TESTIMONIALS

Producers and editors love to see testimonials in your press kit. They want to see that the rest of the world thinks you are great- so… everytime you do an interview make sure you ask for a testimonial. Get one from the host, from the producer, the station manager, anyone you can. Short and sweet- two lines are best. And if you are really good- ask them to send it to you on their stationary and put the letter in your press kit.  Lastly if you can get “celebrity endorsements” that is great too. Famous authors, actors, Presidents…. all good …..But - a las… very hard to get. More on how to get those in our next tip.

WORDS NEVER TO SAY ON TV AND RADIO

Ok- your book is out and you are about to do a gazillian radio shows and hopefully some TV shows too.
Your publisher says promote like crazy- got to make them buy your book!
Talk about your book every chance you get.
Sound familiar? Well  ladies and gents - if you do this you will make the host THROW UP and never invite you back
The 3 words never to say  ‘ IN MY BOOK’   You come across as a pushy -pain in the butt author.
If the host mentions it  at the beginning and at the end- that is great. You can get in the title somewhere-
Like ” when I was researching WHERES YOUR WOW for the past 10 years I interviewed 1000 CEOs and they said…..
But don’t say In my book this , and in my book that- fastest way to get the host to throw up- and never invite you back!
